Kavina is a Certified Specialist in Estates and Trusts Law, recognized by the Law Society of Ontario. She is an experienced solicitor and litigator with over ten (10) years of pre-law experience in business and technology consulting roles. She is also a qualified TEP (Trust & Estate Practitioner) recognized by the Global Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Prior to co-founding NIKA LAW LLP, Kavina led and developed an Estates practice for a top-tier mid-size business law firm in Toronto where she gained experience in Estate Planning and Estate Litigation.

WILLS, ESTATES AND TRUSTS – PLANNING

On the planning side, Kavina deals with estate plans for business owners, professionals and individuals. She often deals with multiple Will plans, cross-border issues, blended families, intervivos (Alter-Ego, Joint-Partner) and testamentary trusts such as Henson Trusts and trusts for young beneficiaries.

EXECUTOR & POWER OF ATTORNEY ADVISORY

Kavina is often retained by Executors, Trustees and persons assigned under Power of Attorney documents to provide advice and assistance in these complex roles. Executors usually require legal expertise to prepare probate applications, assist with liquidation and transfer of assets from an estate or trust to beneficiaries, and in the preparation of estate and trust accounting.

ESTATE & ELDER LAW LITIGATION

In 2018, Kavina was elected to the Canadian Bar Association – Elder Law executive where she now serves as the section chair. This position and her former Board position for the CNPEA (Canadian Network for Prevention) has contributed to her strong personal desire to effect change for seniors and to protect their interests, rights and autonomy.

With our now aging demographic, estate disputes and elder law issues are becoming more common. Kavina deals both in and out of the courtroom with complex family situations which may involve: financial elder abuse, power of attorney issues, mental capacity, guardianship, disputes involving multiple executors, will challenges, and dependent’s relief claims.
